BrightSign App FAQ

May 6, 2016

This page outlines the basics of using the BrightSign App for iPad and iPhone. Please see the BrightSign App documentation for complete information about setting up the App and configuring BrightAuthor to work with it.

How do I send a command to a BrightSign player?

  1. Press the Settings button.
  2. Navigate to the Select BrightSign window by pressing the  button in the BrightSign Unit field.
  3. Tap the unit you wish to connect to. A checkmark will appear next to that unit.
  4. Return to the Settings page using the button in the top left.
  5. Save your new selection by pressing the Save button in the top right.

Now you can send commands from the main page on the iPad or the Actions menu on the iPhone.

How do I use the App to edit pricing on my menu board?

From the main page, click the  icon (located in the upper-right of the screen on iPad, or in the lower-left of the screen on the iPhone). The value in the field below the name of each variable represents the default value of that variable. To change the value, tap the field, enter a new value, and press the Set Value button. The price change will be reflected on the display within seconds.

Why are there no prices/variables on the Variables page?

First, the BrightSign player must be set up with the Local Web Server enabled. Also, the current presentation must have at least one User Variable.

Why is the App not displaying any command buttons when I connect to a player?

Make sure that the BrightSign player is running a presentation that uses UDP Input events. The App populates the list of commands by detecting UDP Input events that are currently in the presentation.

What’s the difference between the Action Name and Action Data?

The Action Name is the title of command button as it is displayed in the UI of the BrightSign App. The Action Data is the actual command word sent to the player: This word must match the UDP Input keyword as it is specified in BrightAuthor.

I can access my unit via a web browser, but BrightSign App can't find the unit.

Make sure that no password is set for the diagnostic web server and local web server of unit. If you don't see the local web server in BrightAuthor setup window (Tools > Setup BrightSign Unit), then go to Edit > Preferences > Networking, and check the Local Networking box. The local web server will appear in setup window after that.

How can I sort the display (the list) of user variables in the App?

Now it looks like the app display the user variables in a random order and NOT in the order they were created or on any alphabetical order. This is not very user friendly.

    What to do?

Do the variables show correctly when you view them using a web browser on your computer? Enter http://unitipaddress:8008 or http://unitipaddress:8080 to access the variables page. Replace unitipaddress with the actual ip address of your unit.

    To delete old variables you must save the project with a different name;

Viewing the user variables using a web browser displays them in the same order as they appear in the app. I have 10 user variables for text that were created in numerical order (1-10), in the app & web browser they appear 5,10,4,1,2,9,7,8,6,3. I've also tried checking the order of the variables in userVariables.db, but they're in a different order again (and there seem to be double entries for a couple of the variables).

Are there plans to release an updated version of the app? If so, it would be great if the text input boxes could be larger (preferably auto-sized to fit all the text).

To display the variables in alphabetical order, open your presentation in BrightAuthor, go to File -> Presentation Properties -> Variables, tick "Alphabetize variable names" box, save and publish a presentation.

Thanks, I'll try that - one thing to note is that this feature only became available in the latest BrightAuthor release (3.7.0.37).
