Is there any way to use a text file to update a player.

I want a simple way to create a menu with pricing and then be able to update those prices without using brightauthor. I would like to do this through local network without having to purchase an online subscription to a service. My thought was just a background image and a text box that you could update.

We have done that by using the built-in web server.

You would use a web browser to connect to the player over the local network, and basically manage User Variables from a web page.

The BrightSign IOS app could be used as well.

Could you please explain a little further. I have access to a web server and have also turned on brightsign web access. I see user variables but when I click on it, it doesn't do anything. Do I have to enable user variables somewhere?

User Variables are created in Menu -> File ->  Presentation Properties -> Variables

Once a variable is created, and the presentation is published to the player, it should appear in the web page served by the player, and in the IOS App. The mobile device and the player must be on the same network for that to work.

    This video may help too

So I have sort of done something (just not actually sure what) by following User Variables are created in Menu -> File ->  Presentation Properties -> Variables. I put custom location under custom device web page and published a site. The site appears on the web page now but this is not what I wanted. I want a way to update the player itself without having to use brightauthor.

Of course it is not what you wanted :)

What you need to publish to show on the screen is a Live Text state, with text fields that pull their information from User Variables.

The way to manage the User Variables value, would be through the BrightSign IOS App, or from a web browser.

To manage User Variables from a web browser, you'd need to enable the Local Web Server (which is not the same as the Diagnostics Web Server)

This is done during the player setup.

Once the Local Web Server is enabled, you can access your User Variables like so:

    http://<your player IP>:8008

If I come across in any way but appreciative please don't take it the wrong way. I have enabled the Web Server as well as the diagnostics web server and can access both of them. When I get to the web server at :8008 it says User Variables in a button. When I click on this it does nothing. I did breeze over the link you sent however it speaks exclusively about the IOS app. I do have users who would eventually use the ios app to make changes but I am far less experienced on Apple even though I worked as a tech for them for 10 years(that was ten years ago).

Wow. After you sent the link, I started to investigate(so you set me on the right path) and found this article.https://brightsign.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/218066107-How-do-I-display-a-UDP-message-using-a-Live-Text-state-

Since then I have added user variables and they now show up on the web server. From there I can change those on the fly. Yay.
