BrightSign Flash Card Technote: Updated Transcend SD Issues

Transcend High Capacity SD/SDHC Flash: HD110, HD210, HD410, HD810, HD1010 Three customers have reported problems using 8 - 32GB SDHC cards from Transcend. We are currently working on a software workaround to avoid this firmware problem on the cards. Customers have reported the following symptoms: -Longer than expected startup times -IO errors on serial output -Errors reading or writing to cards on a mac or pc -Playback glitches Compact Flash: HD600, HD2000 Although the Compact Flash interface is standardized, there are a wide range of performance, compatibility, and reliability issues with different CF card brands and models. Roku strongly recommends that you use "industrial rated" CF cards and that you test CF cards to verify they perform up to specs before deploying. SD/SDHC Flash: HD110, HD210, HD410, HD810, HD1010 Although the SD/SDHC interface is standardized, there are differences in performance and reliability among various card brands and models. Brightsign strongly recommends that you use SD/SDHC cards that support Wear Leveling and use SLC flash chips. Most newer cards support wear leveling, and many card vendors, like Kingston (Ultimate and Elite Pro series) and ATP (Industrial and Promax II series), use SLC flash chips in some products. Note: If you are playing back High-Bitrate HD video, we recommend a minimum of 4 Megabytes per second throughput. In my testing the 2GB Office Depot "ativa" cards do not work at all.

    jcroft,

I can send up updated software to test on the brightsign. Do you have a card you can use to install the update?

    Hi Lyndon:

I've tested the 1.0.73 update with a Kingston Elite Pro 50x 512MB CF card, and no joy. (It does work with a Sandisk Extreme IV 4GB card, though).

If you have an update that might help, could you send it along?

    Thanks,

I will email you the update.

I assume you have tried reformatting this card as fat32.

Yes, I did try formatting the card as FAT32 (actually, it was already formatted that way from the factory, but I did reformat it).

I did find two other cards that work: a plain-jane 256 MB SanDisk, and a THL (who?) 128 MB card.

I tried the link to ensure I get the right Compact Flash cards but the link was broken. What now?

That link still works. Maybe, it was temporarily down.

I see that PQI and Transcend (and others, I guess) make cards as large as 32 GB.  I'm going to have a long long long loop in HD for a visitor center -- are these cards compatible with the Brightsign players?

If you're using the compact players, then you would need an SDHC card. But, yes, those 32GB cards will work with the Brightsign. [/code]

    Lyndon, et al:

I believe it was you who recommended the Transcend brand last year.  I installed Transcend Ultra Industrial CF cards, in 8GB size.  The museum has run the card 24/7 for 18 months with absolutely no dropped frame or other software error ever reported.

Only thing that gave out, as far as I know, is the cheapest part of the setup, the AC power adaptor to the HD2000!
